History

The Netherlands failed to qualify for the 2002 World Cup, beaten to a place by Portugal and the Republic of Ireland, and this is the shirt from the rebuilding that followed. Ruud van Nistelrooy wore 9 through that period, and he settled it in the Euro 2004 play-off with a hat-trick in a 6-0 win over Scotland. He had already missed Euro 2000 through a cruciate ligament injury, so Euro 2004 became his first tournament for his country at 27, and he scored in all three group games as the Dutch reached the semi-finals. A shirt from the years the Netherlands had no tournament to play in.
