Description

The famous all blue of Wembley 1968, reissued as a long sleeve retro shirt in adult XL. This is the design Manchester United wore on the night they became the first English club to win the European Cup, and it remains one of the most recognisable shirts in the club's history precisely because it is not red. A retro tribute piece for collectors who know exactly what that colour means.

History

On 29 May 1968, ten years after the Munich air disaster, Matt Busby's Manchester United met Benfica at Wembley in front of 92,225 people. Both clubs played in red, so with Benfica winning the toss and choosing white, United went out in blue. The reason was television: colour broadcasting had only reached the UK six months earlier, and almost the entire audience was watching in black and white, where red and white would have looked nearly identical in greyscale. The match itself was goalless until Bobby Charlton headed United in front eight minutes into the second half, Jaime Graca equalised on 79 minutes, and extra time brought three goals in seven minutes through a solo effort from George Best, a header from Brian Kidd on his nineteenth birthday, and Charlton's second on 99 minutes. United won 4-1, John Aston was named man of the match, and English football had its first European champions. Please note this is a retro reissue in the 1968 design rather than a shirt from that season.

FAQ

Is this an original 1968 shirt?
No. This is a retro reissue in the 1968 European Cup Final design. Original match shirts from that night are museum pieces.

Why is the shirt blue and not red?
Both United and Benfica played in red, so United switched to blue for the final. Colour television was new in 1968, and most viewers were watching in black and white, where two similar shades would have been hard to tell apart.

What size is this?
Adult XL, long sleeve. Check the images for measurements, and note that retro cuts often run differently from modern shirts.

Do you ship outside Norway?
Yes. We ship across Norway and worldwide, and you can also collect from our Stavanger store.
