History

Joachim Löw took charge of Germany in 2006 and won the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. Euro 2020, delayed by a year and played in summer 2021, was his last tournament. Germany were drawn in the hardest group, with France, Portugal and Hungary. They lost to France, beat Portugal 4-2 and drew with Hungary to go through, but lost 2-0 to England at Wembley in the round of 16. Earlier that year they had also suffered a 2-1 home defeat to North Macedonia in World Cup qualifying. Hansi Flick took over after the tournament.
